Anthropic discusses custom AI chip with Samsung

Qualcomm announced its first custom artificial‑intelligence chip, the Snapdragon AI Accelerator, in partnership with Samsung Electronics on Tuesday, a week after OpenAI revealed its own custom AI chip developed with Broadcom. The new accelerator is designed to run high‑throughput inference workloads on mobile and edge devices, leveraging a 4‑stage pipeline and a 16‑bit tensor processing unit that Qualcomm claims can deliver up to 1.5 TFLOPS of mixed‑precision performance.

The chip is integrated into Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 platform, with Samsung’s 5‑nanometer fabrication process providing a 30 % improvement in power efficiency over previous generations. According to Qualcomm, the accelerator supports both TensorFlow Lite and PyTorch Mobile, and it includes a dedicated secure enclave for privacy‑preserving inference.
