Archaeologists have identified large stone formations near the Red Pyramid in Giza that appear to be the remnants of an ancient dam, providing new evidence that Old Kingdom Egyptians may have utilized controlled water flow to assist in monumental construction. The structures, situated on the plateau where the pyramid was erected roughly 4,500 years ago, challenge conventional narratives that rely solely on human labor, ramps, and sledges to explain the movement of multi-ton limestone blocks. Researchers propose that engineered flooding could have created temporary waterways, allowing builders to transport heavy materials more efficiently across the construction site.
The identified features include substantial retaining walls and channel-like depressions that correspond with the plateau’s natural drainage patterns. Hydrological modeling and geological surveys suggest these formations could have regulated seasonal runoff, forming a reservoir deep enough to submerge portions of the plateau and enable boat transport. The findings align with experimental archaeology and historical analyses indicating that ancient Egyptian engineers possessed advanced hydraulic knowledge.
