Anak Krakatau eruption halts flights at eight Indonesian airports

Indonesia suspended operations at eight airports on Sunday, including its main international hub, after an ash cloud from the Anak Krakatau volcano disrupted air traffic and forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights. The ash plume drifted over the region, prompting authorities to ground aircraft for safety reasons and to protect passengers and crew from volcanic ash damage.

The eruption that began on Saturday produced lava flows and thunderous explosions that were audible up to 435 miles (700 km) away, according to the Indonesian Geology Agency. In addition to the aviation impact, the ashfall curtailed some school activities and fishing operations in coastal communities. A further two eruptions were recorded on Sunday, extending the period of disruption.

With the volcano still active, the Indonesian government has maintained heightened monitoring and will continue to adjust flight schedules as necessary. The situation remains fluid, and authorities are urging travelers to stay informed through official channels.
