Algerian President proposes death penalty for forest fire arsonists

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has called for urgent assistance following a series of devastating wildfires that swept through northeastern Algeria, claiming at least 12 lives and leaving 54 people injured. The blazes, which erupted in the early hours of last week, rapidly spread across forested areas near the towns of Skikda and Constantine, exacerbated by high temperatures and strong winds that the meteorological service had warned about.

In response, the government has mobilised firefighting units from across the country and requested additional resources from neighboring states. Emergency medical teams have been dispatched to the hardest‑hit communities, and temporary shelters have been set up for displaced residents. Tebboune urged the public to remain vigilant and to report any signs of fire promptly, while also highlighting the need for better forest management and early warning systems to prevent future incidents.
