AI-generated Debate Replies Outperform Politicians in Authenticity

A study published in *PLOS One* reveals that AI-generated impersonations of political figures are perceived as more authentic, relevant, and coherent than the actual responses given by those figures during debates. Conducted by Steffen Herbold of the University of Passau and colleagues, the research involved 1,050 participants who evaluated AI-simulated speeches and answers alongside real ones from politicians. The findings challenge assumptions about the credibility of human-generated political discourse, highlighting a growing tension between technological advancements and public trust in democratic processes.

The study tested participants’ perceptions of authenticity, relevance, and coherence in AI-generated versus real political statements. Researchers created AI responses using machine learning models trained on past statements from politicians, while real responses were sourced from recorded debates. Participants, unaware of the AI origin of some content, rated AI-generated answers significantly higher across all three criteria.
