AI data centres strain global electricity systems

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has issued a warning that the rapid expansion of data‑intensive technologies, especially artificial‑intelligence (AI) data centres, is outpacing the capacity of existing electricity infrastructure. In a recent assessment, the commission highlighted that the surge in power demand from AI‑driven computing facilities is creating a mismatch with the pace of upgrades to generation, transmission and distribution networks, raising questions about the future reliability and resilience of global energy systems.

UNECE officials noted that the imbalance could lead to heightened stress on power grids, increased risk of outages, and the need for substantial investment in renewable generation and grid modernization to accommodate the growing load. The commission called for coordinated policy measures, accelerated development of sustainable energy sources, and strategic planning to ensure that electricity supply can keep pace with the expanding digital economy, thereby safeguarding energy security worldwide.
