AI Boom Could Generate 23 Million Shipping Containers of E‑Waste by 2050
A new report from the nonprofit Basel Action Network (BAN) warns that e‑waste generated by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence has been vastly underestimated. The study projects that by 2050 the discarded hardware and infrastructure required to run AI models could fill 23 million 40‑foot shipping containers—enough to circle the globe six times if the containers were placed end to end.
Unlike earlier estimates that focused mainly on the servers themselves, the BAN analysis includes the full spectrum of supporting infrastructure—cooling systems, power grids, and ancillary equipment that power data centers. This broader scope reveals a much larger environmental footprint for AI, underscoring the need for more robust waste‑management strategies as the industry continues to grow.
