Adult chimpanzees hand tools to juveniles, teaching ant and algae fishing
Adult chimpanzees have been observed handing tools to younger relatives, a behavior that facilitates the acquisition of techniques used to fish for ants and algae. Researchers documenting the interactions recorded multiple instances in which adult females and males deliberately selected sticks, leaf fragments, or other implements and passed them to juveniles during foraging bouts.
The observations were made at a long‑term field site in central Africa, where systematic monitoring of chimpanzee groups has been ongoing for several decades. Video footage and field notes show that the tool transfer occurs in a structured manner: the adult first demonstrates the appropriate grip and motion, then offers the implement to the juvenile, who subsequently attempts the fishing action. The juveniles quickly improve their success rates, suggesting that the social transmission of tool use is a key component of skill development in the species.
These findings add to a growing body of evidence that cultural learning, including the teaching of complex foraging strategies, is present in non‑human primates.
