90,000 Rubber Ducks Race Down Chicago River for Charity

Rubber ducks raced down the Chicago River on Thursday as part of the city’s annual Ducky Derby, a whimsical fundraiser that supports Special Olympics Illinois and its athletes. The event, held along the river’s historic stretch between the Museum Campus and Navy Pier, drew a lively crowd of families, local officials, and corporate sponsors who cheered the bright yellow boats as they glided past iconic landmarks.

The Derby featured more than 1,200 custom‑painted ducks, each sponsored by businesses ranging from tech startups to community nonprofits. Participants, including Special Olympics athletes, parents, and volunteers, paid entry fees that were split between the organization’s training programs and its community outreach initiatives. Organizers reported that the 2024 race raised $75,000, surpassing last year’s total and providing new scholarships for athletes to attend national competitions.

Special Olympics Illinois officials highlighted the event’s role in raising both funds and awareness for the organization’s inclusive sports programs. “The Ducky Derby is a fun way to bring the community together while ensuring our athletes have the resources they need,” said program director Maya Patel. The next Derby is scheduled for May 2025, with plans to expand the participant pool and increase the fundraising goal.
