Archaeologists working in Uzbekistan have uncovered a collection of diminutive stone projectile points that date to roughly 80,000 years ago. Microscopic analysis of the artifacts’ dimensions, hafting grooves and the micro‑fracture patterns on associated animal bones indicates that the points were likely employed as arrowheads, a function previously documented only for much later sites. The finds were recovered from a stratified Paleolithic layer and radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence dating place the assemblage firmly within the Middle Pleistocene. Their technological attributes closely parallel those of projectile points recovered from a Homo sapiens occupation in southwestern France, where similar design and impact damage have been recorded for artifacts dated to around 40,000 years ago.
The Uzbekian discovery pushes the emergence of advanced projectile technology in Central Asia several tens of thousands of years earlier than the earliest known examples in Europe. Researchers suggest that such sophisticated weaponry could have been developed by archaic human populations inhabiting the region before modern humans fully colonized the continent, implying a more complex pattern of technological diffusion and migration than previously assumed.
