76 km² Greenland Iceberg Hits Joe Island, Remains Intact
A massive iceberg, covering more than 76 square kilometres, broke away from Greenland’s Petermann Glacier in August 2026, becoming the largest glacier calving event in the Arctic since 2020. The berg, which emerged from the glacier’s front, immediately entered the Nares Strait, where it collided with Joe Island. Despite the impact, the iceberg remained intact and has not fractured since the collision.
Satellite imagery and automatic tracking systems are now monitoring the iceberg’s drift through the strait. The monitoring effort, coordinated by the Arctic Research Institute, will provide data on the berg’s trajectory, speed, and potential influence on local sea‑ice conditions. Scientists are particularly interested in how the iceberg’s presence may affect ocean currents and marine ecosystems in the region.
