245 Algae Blooms Reported Across Northern Ireland Water Systems

Northern Ireland’s water authorities have reported that 245 separate algae blooms are presently affecting rivers, lakes and coastal inlets across the region. The figure, released by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, reflects the total number of distinct bloom incidents identified through routine monitoring and satellite imaging as of this week.

Environmental officials note that the proliferation of algal growth is linked to elevated nutrient levels, warmer temperatures and increased runoff from agricultural land, conditions that can degrade water quality, threaten aquatic ecosystems and limit recreational use. Agencies are intensifying sampling efforts, issuing advisories where necessary and working with stakeholders to implement mitigation strategies, while continuing to track the blooms’ development throughout the season.
