2027 Cricket World Cup adopts Super Seven format, may include extra India-Pakistan match

The 2027 One‑Day International (ODI) tournament in Africa will feature 14 national teams competing across a revised format that eliminates the traditional quarter‑final round. Commencing in June, the competition will be hosted by three African nations—Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania—and will begin with a group stage in which the teams are divided into two pools of seven. The top three sides from each pool will advance to a newly introduced Super Seven stage, replacing the knockout quarter‑finals used in earlier editions.

In the Super Seven round, the qualifying teams will play each other once, with points carried over from the group matches against fellow qualifiers. The two highest‑ranked teams at the conclusion of this stage will contest the final, while the third‑placed side will receive the bronze medal. Organisers note that the streamlined structure reduces the number of matches while maintaining competitive balance, and the tournament is slated to conclude with the championship match in early July.
