2026 Ranking Shows Top U.S. Cities for Happiness

A recent national survey released by the Institute for Well‑Being has identified the city where Americans report the highest levels of overall happiness. The study, which surveyed more than 12,000 residents across all 50 states, asked participants to rate their life satisfaction, sense of community, and daily stress levels. According to the findings, the city topping the list is Boise, Idaho, a result that surprised many given its relatively small population and modest economic profile.

The ranking methodology combined self‑reported happiness scores with objective indicators such as median household income, unemployment rate, and access to green space. Boise scored highly on all fronts, boasting a low cost of living, a growing tech sector, and a strong sense of civic pride among its residents. Other cities that made the top ten included Austin, Texas; Asheville, North Carolina; and Madison, Wisconsin, all of which scored above the national average on community engagement and health outcomes.

The report’s authors note that while larger metropolitan areas often dominate discussions of quality of life, smaller cities can offer unique advantages that foster well‑being. They suggest that factors such as affordable housing, community cohesion, and a balanced work‑life environment play a significant role in residents’ happiness.
