1080 Drops Reduce Rat Numbers, but Predators Rebound Quickly
Aerial applications of the pesticide sodium fluoroacetate, commonly known as 1080, have long been employed across New Zealand’s public conservation lands to suppress invasive rodent and mustelid populations. While these drops can sharply reduce the numbers of rats and stoats in the short term, the targeted predators—particularly ship rats (Rattus rattus)—often recover to equal or greater densities within a few years after treatment.
Researchers examined 24 years of small‑mammal tracking records from a network of monitoring sites spanning the country’s varied ecosystems. The analysis revealed that the timing of post‑treatment rebounds is not uniform; some regions experience rapid resurgence within two to three years, whereas others show delayed recoveries extending beyond five years. Differences in habitat type, climate, and the spatial arrangement of 1080 operations were identified as likely contributors to the observed regional variation.
The findings underscore the need for region‑specific management strategies when planning successive 1080 applications or integrating complementary control measures. By accounting for the variable rebound timelines, conservation agencies can better align predator‑control efforts with the ecological goals of protecting native fauna and restoring biodiversity on New Zealand’s public lands.
